Computing at Ryedene

“We are Computer Scientists”

My name is Mr C and I am the subject lead for Computing. Computing is an amazing subject because, as technology develops and new jobs are created every day, all children deserve the opportunity to learn and be confident when using new technology. I love seeing children getting creative with coding, creating their own quizzes and games. It is also wonderful to inspire future computer scientists, film makers and animators in the different units we teach at Ryedene.

Vision:  The vision for Computing at Ryedene is to ensure a high-quality universal provision of computing education for all pupils, equipping pupils to use computational thinking and creativity to understand and change the world.  We believe it is our responsibility to ensure that pupils become digitally literate, with the ability to use, express themselves and develop their ideas through information and communication technology, at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in a digital world.

What we are teaching in Computing: Computing at Ryedene Primary School will be taught in line with the legal requirements. The teaching of Computing is fully inclusive and will include provision for Computing for all pupils on the school roll. The content of Computing will follow the Teach Computing Curriculum, which covers all areas of the Computing National Curriculum, including systems and networks, creating media, programming and data and information.  As part of our curriculum, pupils will also be taught how to be responsible digital citizens, with e-safety messages revisited half-termly using resources from Safer Internet Day and CEOP.

How we teach Computing:  Teachers use the Teach Computing scheme of work to guide and support pupils to meet the broad outcomes in line with the national curriculum. Teachers have a clearly outlined key documents pack to support them including: a knowledge organiser with prior learning links, skills progression, a Long-Term Plan and Medium-Term plans which are carefully constructed offering a sequence of learning. Planning has the required/example learning outcomes on and is progressive, with each unit following on from something that has been learned before. Pupils have access to a Computing Suite, where they can use computer programmes such as Scratch, Tinkercad and Canva to program and create projects.  They can also use iPads to create films, edit videos and take photos when these skills are taught within the units.

Impact – what the children have learnt: Children at Ryedene enjoy having a broad computing curriculum and have the opportunity to showcase many different skills.  Through engaging in inclusive computing lessons, all children can develop their confidence and self-esteem whilst at Ryedene.  They develop an understanding of different computing skills, including how companies create games and websites, and have the opportunity to create and share their own. By the end of each key stage, pupils are expected to know, apply and understand the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, and become responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology. Evidence to support this is gathered through the sharing of digital creations with the subject lead.
